Mari Smith is a success coach, trainer, and author of several e-books and e-courses.

Personal journey

Canadian by birth, Scottish by heritage, Mari is a classic American success story. Armed with two suitcases, a mere £50 in her pocket, and very big dreams, she arrived in San Diego, California, from Scotland in 1999.

She left behind a deep financial hole, determined to find a way to pay off the debt.

Mari quickly obtained a work visa, and created a brand new life by immersing herself in the mecca of free enterprise and self-improvement opportunities that the US had to offer. She changed her money habits forever and paid off all debt back in her homeland.

Mari soon met her husband, and they created a business together in the wedding industry which they ran for several years.

Fueled by the trauma of her parents' divorce at age 12, and her experience of witnessing her wedding clients pledge their lifelong commitment despite the rising divorce rate, Mari set off on a mission to impact the lives of these couples on a much deeper level.

She undertook extensive training as a relationship coach, having previously studied romantic relationships for over 15 years. Her research found that self-made millionaires have an uncanny ability to choose the right mate for life. This inspired Mari to share the keys that those millionaires use to attract and keep their partners.

In her own words:

Relationships fascinate me! My bookshelf is packed with wonderful titles that have really inspired me over the years. And now, after being with my husband since 1999, I want to reach out to as many single people as I can to educate and inspire them that it truly is possible to meet one special person and build a solid relationship together.

In order to create a successful relationship, I believe the best place to start is before meeting your partner. Making the right partner choice from the beginning gives you a much better chance of co-creating a lasting relationship.

For nearly four years, I ran an entertainment business with my husband - providing music and coordination services for weddings. I noticed something interesting about the Brides and Grooms that I would see walking up the aisle every weekend - most of them seemed so intently focused on the wedding day that they were not thinking about the marriage beyond that day.

Inspired to make a difference, I decided to get some specific training in the area of relationship coaching. Having previously run my own personal development seminar company in Scotland, it seemed like a natural progression to now focus on relationship seminars.

I completed my coach training in July 2002 and launched my own business.

My story: I came to San Diego in January 1999 for a one-month vacation. Some long-lost friends had invited me to "come and check out Southern California!" How could I resist the offer? I had been living in Scotland for the previous 20 years (after spending my childhood in Canada!). I literally walked away from everything I had going in Scotland, including my new business venture that I had spent the previous year building up, delivering personal growth seminars.

But, I just knew at a cellular level that something was calling me to San Diego. Through a series of incredible synchronistic events, I created a sponsor, a great place to stay, a new career... and then my husband!

Ty and I met at a personal growth seminar called "Money and You" in May 1999 - it's an amazing 3.5 day experience with 60% games and super-learning techniques. By the end of the seminar, Ty and I were definitely clicking... and he could dance too! Aah, major brownie points! Here we are at a Landmark Wisdom party in January 2003.

After dating for nearly two years, Ty and I were married on Valentine's Day, 2001. I was mid-30's, he was late-40's. This is the first marriage for both of us and neither of us have children.

What amazes me to this day is that in 1998 - the year before I came to California - I had picked up a copy of the book Are You The One For Me? by Barbara De Angelis. There is an exercise in the book where you create a comprehensive profile of what you are looking for in a relationship with your Ideal Life Partner. My list was seven pages long! And guess what? I still have that list and muse over it from time to time -- because Ty matches it so well!
